Discussing Advanced Directives is a sensitive but critical element of patient care. Learn best practices and tips on how to initiate and conduct a productive conversation that puts the patient first.

Wendy Handler (DOROT)                                    Susie Kessler (JCC)


Wendy Handler, LMSW, Director of Onsite & Special Programs at DOROT, is responsible for developing innovative programming to support DOROT’s engaged community of older adults.  Wendy joined the agency in December 2015 to launch Lasting Impressions: DOROT’s Legacy Project, as a way to help older adults share their important stories through one-on-one oral history projects and a range of onsite legacy arts programming.  In addition to programming responsibilities at DOROT, Wendy manages The Pearls of Wisdom, a touring ensemble of elder storytellers, and DOROT’s participation in the What Matters initiative, assisting community members with their advance health care directives. Wendy is certified as a What Matters instructor, able to train facilitators to conduct individual or group conversations . 

Prior to joining DOROT, Wendy worked at Jarvie Commonweal Service. She started her career in public relations, working in the technology sector.  A proud Wolverine, Wendy received her B.A. at the University of Michigan and her M.S.W. at Fordham University.


Susie Kessler was the former coordinator of the National Center for Jewish Healing and the former program director of Makom: The Center for Meditation and Spirituality at the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan. She is currently the Site Manager for What Matters: Caring Conversations about End of Life and is an instructor certified by Respecting Choices to train facilitators to conduct these conversations on a one-on-one basis or for a group.
